Who should attend:

The intended audience for this workshop includes teachers and therapists who are working directly or indirectly with students experiencing physical, cognitive and sensory difficulties. This workshop is suitable for those new to assistive technology and those who have experience of using assistive technology and want to extend their knowledge.

About the Workshop:
This workshop will be an opportunity which will provide you a unique opportunity to work through the case studies of students with a range of special needs. Joining the learning to explore:

  • How technology can help you as a teacher or therapist overcome the barriers students with special needs face each day in your classroom.
  • Common approaches to accessibility that cost nothing yet can have a huge impact on pupil progress.
  • Experience and get hands on with a range of different access technologies from alternative keyboards, communication devices and eye gaze systems.
  • Learn how you can use them to help your students learn, communicate and make progress.

Topic: ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY: What every teacher needs to know
Presenter: Ian Bean, ICT & Assistive Technology Consultant and Trainer, SENICT Training and Consultancy, Todmorden, England.

About the workshop:
Working through the case studies of four students with a range of special needs, we’ll explore how technology can help you as a teacher or therapist overcome many of the barriers our students with special needs face each day in the classroom. We’ll explore common approaches to accessibility that cost nothing yet can have a huge impact on pupil progress. We’ll see, experience and get hands on with a range of different access technologies from alternative keyboards, communication devices and eye gaze systems and learn how you can use them to help your students learn, communicate and make progress.

Learning outcomes:

      • Identify common access difficulties faced by students with special needs.
      • Know a range of simple teaching strategies that you can use to include students with special needs.
      • Be aware of assistive technology; who it is for and how to use it.
      • Understand how children develop access skills and what success with assistive technology looks like.
      • Know how to include assistive technology users in your lessons.
      • Know where to find additional information, support and free resources.

This workshop is supported with a free resource pack that includes information about specific technologies and how to use them; creative ideas and lesson plans to support teaching students using assistive technology and over 150 free accessible resources to use in your classroom.
